Around 15 metro stations will soon be remodelled by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to combat the rising rush of commuters by each passing day. Based on different surveys done by the DMRC over the years, the strategic planning includes a slew of measures like shifting of ticket counters to constructing ramps and stairways.
The Metro, which is a lifeline for the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR), is used by around 28 lakh passengers every day. The stations are being worked upon depending on the number of commuters that each of them experiences during the day.
The DMRC has been conducting regular studies on travellers' rush to further their development model to ease pressure on the facility and make travelling more convenient for people.
The metro stations that would undergo changes include Rithala, Uttam Nagar, Dwarka Sector 21, Dilshad Garden, Kashmere Gate, Pragati Maidan. Dilshad Garden, Jahangirpuri, Noida City Centre, Noida Sector 16, Sikanderpur, Tilak Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Karol Bagh, Hauz Khas, GTB Nagar among others. Similar work is already being done in 17 stations while the DMRC redeveloped five stations — Rajiv Chowk, New Delhi, Vaishali, Huda City Centre and Chandni Chowk in the recent past.
According to a senior DMRC official, the security checkpoint in Laxmi Nagar will soon be shifted since the station witnesses a heavy rush of commuters every day.
The official further shared that the security check and the ticket counter in Vaishali metro station were on the first floor which led to long queues during peak hours. Hence, they started selling tickets at the ground floor, while the security remained on the concourse. The metro which chugs on a system as long as 213 kilometres, recently found itself in the thick of controversy after its fares were increased for the second time in less than six months.
