With focus on the objective of last mile connectivity to nearby localities, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will be bringing more than 900 electric feeder buses on road. Entrusted by the Delhi government which finalised 905 such buses for the convenience of lakhs of passengers using the Metro, the proposal was mooted during the budget this year.

The new buses will ply within five kilometres of different metro stations, at a frequency of five minutes. Of the other salient features, these buses will not have any conductors and commuters will be able to avail the services by using their Metro smart card. The DMRC has sent a proposal to the Delhi government in this regard, proposing two types of buses for the purpose having seats varying between 7 to 20.

The buses will operate on the lines of cluster scheme as part of a separate subsidiary company to be formed by the rail body. This means that the government will compensate for any loss incurred by the DMRC while providing this service. According to senior officials in DMRC, they have already analysed around 50 routes to run these electric feeder buses. The official shared that while they had furnished a proposal of both CNG and electric buses, the latter has found favour with the government as it has made provisions for them in its latest budget that has green Delhi at its mainstay.

The DMRC has a fleet of over around 300 feeder buses operating around 40 routes across Delhi. They run from 8 am in the morning to 10 pm at night, providing ease of travelling to commuters. By introducing new fleet this year, Metro authorities hope to notch up the number to more than 500. Following this, it will also increase the number of routes on which these buses will ply.
