The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC)'s plan to help commuters with last-mile connectivity using e-rickshaws has hit a roadblock. The rail body had plans afoot to provide e-rickshaws outside all Metro stations to help travellers reach their destination conveniently as soon as they deboard. However, certain rules in place by the Delhi Police and the Delhi government are preventing the scheme from rolling out.

According to the DMRC, e-rickshaws will ease travel woes from Metro station to the final destination once passengers alight from the train. More than 390 Metro feeder buses that ply on roads is a step in this regard.

However, the facility, according to the rail body, is not being availed by all the commuters. A survey conducted by the DMRC found that only 40 percent of its commuters use feeder buses mainly because of reasons. One is that they follow a longer route and secondly these vehicles ply only on main roads, with no access to colonies and similar areas. Hence, the corporation plans to roll out e-rickshaws.

Creating hindrance is the notification by the Delhi Police that bars plying of e-rickshaws on more than 272 roads. "Keeping in view traffic congestion, the Delhi Police does not allow plying of e-rickshaws in certain areas. We plan to seek some leeway in these rules for the sake of our passengers," a senior Metro official said. Another issue that the DMRC needs the government to address is its policy to not allow an individual or organisation to own more than one e-rickshaw. "Anybody we rope in for this plan will require them to own thousands of these vehicles, which is not allowed according to these rules. We would be approaching the government soon for some way out," said the official.
