Switching terminals at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport will not require getting out and boarding low-floor buses anymore, if DIAL's IGI master plan unfolds the way it has been planned over the coming years.

Documents of the master plan accessed by DNA, show that the Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) plans to redesign the entire IGI airport which has been struggling with space constraints due to its fast rising footfall. As planned, the entire overhaul would unfold over the next 17 years in three phases between the year 2016 to 2034, termed 3A, 3B and 4.

"As listed under phase 3A which will be started in 2016 and extend up to 2020, the major development projects will be the expansion of Terminal 1D to make it more efficient and able to handle the footfall of 30 million passengers annually. Furthermore, a fourth runway will be constructed with which number of taxiways and area of apron will also increase. Cargo terminal will also undergo expansion in this phase," said a senior official from the ministry of civil aviation.

Once phase 3B has been completed, officials said, the plan will be to move on phase 3B which would be from 2021 to 2025. This will witness a number of airfield improvements and first stage of the new Terminal 4. "This is when the APM - Automatic Passenger Mover will be introduced. The technology will be very helpful as the passengers will no longer be required to step out of the terminal buildings in order to change their terminals. A walkalator-like strip will connect terminals internally and automatically take the passengers to their desired terminals. This will save time, energy and unnecessary movement of traffic outside terminals," the official said.

The newly designed Terminal 4 will be fully operational in phase 4, where the Delhi airport will have five boarding points to facilitate easy and smooth access. The phase will run between 2026 to 2034. By this time, the footfall of the airport is expected to be 109 million.
