It’s not just cases but deaths related to dengue are also slowly rising in the Capital. The recently released municipal report stated the dengue death toll in the city had reached three, while the Delhi government-run Lok Nayak Hospital confirmed another two dengue deaths on Friday, taking the toll to five.

From the three deaths, there were two victims — both women and one boy. Meena Devi, 49, from Karawal Nagar, died at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) on September 2, and Rhoda Daimai, 26, from Manipur died at Holy Family Hospital on August 27, but it took two months for the MCD to confirm them in their weekly report. Earlier, the mosquito-borne disease had claimed its first victim in the city this year, when a 12-year-old boy died of dengue shock syndrome at SGRH on August 1. Daimai had come to Delhi for her treatment.

Meanwhile, overall cases have crossed the 5,000 mark, totaling up to 5,220. Of the total 5,220 dengue cases, 2,564 were residents of Delhi, while the rest were from other states. Of the 2,564 Delhi cases, 757 were reported this month, and 412 in the last one week.

Cases of vector-borne diseases are usually reported between mid-July and November-end. This year, however, it has been much earlier due to the early arrival of the monsoon.
