In a unique endeavour, BJP-ruled municipal corporations have been educating parents through teachers about the benefits of Prime Minister Modi's recent move to end black money through Parent-Teacher meetings (PTM).

Around 584 schools, which come under these corporations, saw teachers explaining to parents the prime minister's demonetization policy. They also explained the rationale behind the withdrawal of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

The PTM agenda was an initiative taken up by BJP leader Mamta Nagpal, who is the chairman of the education committee of the North Corporation. A circular regarding the same was sent to each of the 584 schools under the corporation.

It was not just demonetization that was explained to parents, many of whom are from the lower-middle class economic group. In one of the PTMs held on November 26, in the schools run by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) the agenda was listed out on blackboards.

The session started with the importance of parents opening bank accounts for children and getting their Aadhar Cards. After this, the parents touched upon the demonetization move taken up by the government.

"The purpose of the meet was to educate the parents who constitute migrant workers and labourers, most of who are illiterate. It is important to discuss with them the need for the move on withdrawal of old currency so that they are not duped by anyone," said Nagpal.

"We also decided to educate these parents about the issue so that they feel connected with the society at large," she added.

The PTMs seems to have been a success with some parents. Maya Devi, who works as a domestic help in Rohini, in North Delhi, and has her seven-year-old daughter enrolled in an MCD school, said:

"The teachers discussed the issue of cash-ban. They told us that initially everyone will have to bear long queues due to the lack of cash, but it will mean the end of corruption. They also said that it will help the poor immensely if black money is removed from the country."
