From school kids to age old politicians, Delhiites were geared up on Wednesday to celebrate International Yoga Day. Nearly 600 students and teachers from various government schools gathered at Chattarsal Stadium to celebrate the day.

Apart from this, more than 10,000 people from all across the country gathered at the Inner Circle of Connaught Place to perform yoga in the morning. The Yoga session at Connaught Place was organised by Ministry of Ayush in collaboration with the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC).

Among the dignitaries, Union Minister of Urban Development & Information and Broadcasting, Venkaiah Naidu, along with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, were present at the event. Former Bihar Governor and the NDA's Presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind, Minister of State for Sport and Youth Affairs Shri Vijay Goel, Lt Governor Shri Anil Baijal, and Member of Parliament Meenakashi Lekhi were also present.

Speaking at the event, Ram Nath Kovind said, "Yoga is our ancient spiritual way of life for our overall well being of physical and mental as well as inner conscious." Naidu agreed and added, "It is a way of living whose aim is a healthy mind in a healthy body."

Along with this, the NDMC organised yoga at Nehru Park, Talkatora Garden, Lodhi Garden and the children's park in India Gate. Similar programmes were organised by Delhi Police at various police colonies and police complexes in Ramlila Ground, Gandhi Smriti, Malviya Nagar and many other places.

"We do yoga every day in our school. As a part of our summer camp, we have also opted for yoga. I feel I can focus more on my studies," said Rani Namrata, a student of government school who participated in the yoga session at Chattarsal Stadium. Speaking about the Capital, CM Kejriwal said, "In order to promote yoga and the general well being of the citizen, the Delhi government will introduce yoga in its schools."

Analysis

The fact that Delhi Chief Minister has seen fit to promote yoga in schools is an encouraging sign as it means that there are some areas that the Centre and the Delhi government can agree on
If this co-operation can extend to other issues such as co-operation between the civic bodies and the government, that would be welcome news for Delhi
