Despite best efforts by officials to make the admission process less cumbersome for aspirants to the Delhi University, technical glitches marred the first day of admissions into the undergraduate courses with hundreds of students having to return without even initiating the procedure on Tuesday.

While many students said that they could not access their admission portal as the server of university's website remained down for half of the day, some claimed that even if they managed to log in, the tabs of the portal were not opening.

Delhi University colleges had announced their first cut-off list on Monday. On that basis, colleges shortlist the candidates applied for admission in respective courses. The students now need to log in to their admission portal to know if they have qualified for their desired college or not. Then they would take a print out of that list and visit the colleges for document verification and approval for admission. "How can we expect to finish the admission process when could not even get to know which college we have qualified for?" asked Nikhil Bansal, a resident of north Delhi's Civil lines.

While the technical issues were restored by some college after 12 pm, some were struggling with them till the evening. The pressure was also increased on officials on account of a two-day holiday which is set to follow the first day of admissions. However, officials say that they are trying to remove the glitches. "The website was down due to the excessive rush during the day. We are trying to fix this," said a senior official.

Meanwhile, some student who managed to get their admission slip and their documents verified could not submit the fee as the portal stopped working. "I could not complete my admission procedure today despite coming to the college at 10 am," said Shreya Singh, another student at the Gargi College.

The admission process for the first cut-off list will continue till June 21. This year, the Delhi University received around 2.2 lakh applications for about 56,000 seats in its 63 colleges. The second, third, fourth and fifth cut-offs will be announced on June 25, June 30, July 6 and July 12, respectively.
