Delhi University Students Union polls witness low voter turnout

Only 43.8% students came out to vote, which was marginally better than last year; results of all 23 candidates will be declared today

The Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) election held on Wednesday saw a low voter turnout. As per the data released only 43.8 per cent students had casted their vote . The university expected a voter turnout of 1.35 lakh students at 52 centres. Last year, the voter turnout was marginally better at 42.8 per cent.

The fate of the 23 candidates contesting for various seats will be decided on Thursday. Counting will start from 8:30 am at the Community Hall in Police Lines in Delhi's Kingsway Camp area.

As many as 23 candidates including five women are contesting for posts including president, vice-president, secretary and joint secretary. In this keenly contested polls, incumbent National Students Union of India (NSUI) is hoping to repeat history while its arch rival Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) wants to avenge last year's defeat. Caste and a potpourri of old and new promises remained the predominant factors for DUSU 2018.

Free laptops, special economical thalis at Rs 10, Institute of Eminence status kept the agendas alive across DU as candidates pitched their cases on 'real' issues. Some common poll planks running across all manifesto were women's safety, sanitary pad vending machine and gender sensitisation.       

Polling across 52 colleges started at 8:30 am for the morning session students, concluding at 1 PM. A second round was held at 3PM till 7:30 pm for evening students. Around 700 Electronic Voting Machines(EVM) were installed to facilitate the process. Senior faculty members were deputed as observers at casting stations.

Heavy police bandobast was in place with 700 cops including women deployed across the campus to ensure free and fair voting without any use of money or muscle power. College entrance gates were barricaded and only students and staff carrying valid ID were allowed to enter the premises. Delhi Police also warned of strict action against those influencing voters in an unlawful manner.

Between 8.30 am and 9.30 am, 18.5 per cent votes were registered. By 1 pm, 34 per cent votes emerged as the final figure for morning half.
