Three-year-old Hadia Nesari may be unaware of the role she has played in further improving the cross-border harmony, but she sure feels much better since her surgery at a private hospital in Delhi. The Afghan toddler needed a liver transplant and had travelled with her parents to Lahore for the same. The child’s health further deteriorated when a doctor in Pakistan advised her to be taken to Delhi for the transplant. Due to lack of funds, the paediatrician from Lahore decided to fund Hadia’s surgery.

“Hadia had been unwell in Afghanistan for some time and was referred to my department at Children’s Hospital, Lahore. We admitted her in a seriously ill condition. She had contracted the chronic liver disease of unknown cause and despite our best efforts, her disease became severe and the organ became cirrhotic. Essentially, her liver was failing. In the end, the only option was a liver transplant. I immediately referred her to Delhi,” said Dr Huma Cheema, Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology, Children’s Hospital, Lahore, Pakistan.

When the family was counselled to go for a liver transplant, they showed inefficiency as Hadia’s father is a teacher and the costs were too high. Dr Cheema then decided to fund the treatment and visited Delhi with the family.

“We started the assessment for a liver transplant immediately as Hadia needed an urgent liver transplant. In about 20 percent of children needing a liver transplant, the cause cannot be identified as was the case with Hadia. Once liver failure becomes end stage, the only treatment is a liver transplant. Hadia is the third child from Afghanistan to have received a transplant at our hospitals,” said Dr Anupam Sibal, Group Medical Director and Senior Consultant, Paediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital.

“Nothing is worse than watching your child suffer through disease. By giving new life to Hadia, doctors at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals have given a new life to our family. We go back to Afghanistan taking back fond memories of our time in India,” added her father.
