Lutyen's Delhi housing VVIP quarters including the Prime Minister's had turned into a garbage dump on Thursday as contractual sanitation workers of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) dumped garbage on roads to protest against the reduction in the pay scale as well as demanding regularisation of jobs.

The major streets were littered with heaps of garbage including prominent buildings in the area including Rail Bhawan, Shastri Bhawan, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Rafi Marg, Ashoka Road and Janpath, among others.

Such a strike by sanitation workers has been witnessed by the premier civic body after more than two decades. According to officials, a four-day long strike had taken place in 1982 around the time of the Asian Games in the city.

The protest strike, however, was called off the same day after the civic body held a meeting with the workers. Extra security was deployed as well the main gate of the NDMC building was closed till the meeting was convened.

Around 8,000 sanitation workers attached to two unions --- New Delhi Nagarpalika Joint Action Committee and New Delhi Nagarpalika Safai Samiti --- had participated in the strike.

"The strike has been called off for now. We were called for a meeting with the chairman. They told us that our demands for our existing pay scale of Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) will be retained and that a proposal for the same will be sent to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs within two weeks. They have asked for a month's time for considering our demands. We will wait for a month before we take any step," said Ravinder Bharti, president of the Joint Action Committee.

The meeting was convened by the NDMC chairman and secretary along with representatives of the union.

A notification regarding the change in pay scale from DTL to Central Pay Commission (CPC) was issued by the civic body on April 7.

"After the notification was received, we had met the secretary. However, there was no resolution. It is only today that they have assured us of considering our demands," said Bharti.

Meanwhile, NDMC officials, said, "A meeting has been convened to call off the protest. A proposal regarding the pay scale will be sent to the MHA for consideration."
