A 'casteist' question mentioned in an exam paper for a Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB) for primary teachers left the teachers surprised on Saturday. The question created uproar among various candidates among the SC/ST/OBC teachers' forum, prompting the government and the board to take immediate action against the officers involved.

The members of SC/ST/OBC teachers' forum on Sunday wrote to the President of India Ramnath Kovind, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Rajnath Singh, Delhi education minister Manish Sisodia and Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal demanding removal of the DSSSB chairperson.

"We demand an immediate action against the chairperson and also an assurance that such insensitivity will not be repeated in future. Otherwise, we will launch a massive protest against this," said Hansraj Suman, a member of the forum. The forum has also called an emergency meeting on Tuesday.

The paper had four options pointing to a caste based system of Brahminical Society. It is a multiple choice question, in which the student, whatever answer is chosen is highly racist and gender insensitive too. The DSSSB has decided to take an action against the paper setters.

"The appearance of any such question which may have unintentionally hurt the sentiments of any section of society is deeply regretted. During the evaluation process this question shall not be evaluated for the purpose of preparation of results. The board is taking necessary corrective measures to sensitize its paper setters and suitable action is being taken to ensure that such incident is not repeated in future," the board said in its statement.

Delhi SC/ST welfare minister Rajendra Pal Gautam condemned the incident and demanded an immediate explanation from the board. "I will meet the Delhi Chief Secretary on Monday to discuss this issue. The Service Department is still under the LG of Delhi, which is the governing body of DSSSB. Service Department has to now come clean on what made them agree to induct such a shoddy question," he said.

DELHI MINISTER SEEKS ACTION

Delhi minister Rajendra Pal Gautam Sunday demanded action against officials of the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board over a “racist and misogynist question”. In a statement, the Delhi SC/ST minister expressed “serious concern” on the issue and said that he will ask Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash to take appropriate action against the DSSSB. According to the statement, the minister said that the service department, which is under the Lieutenant Governor, is the governing body of the DSSSB.
