The power demand in Delhi broke all records on Friday and reached 6,651 MW in the afternoon, highest ever this season. Last year, the highest peak power demand was recorded at 6,526 MW on June 6.
The power department and distribution companies of the Delhi government expect the peak demand to breach 7,000 MW mark in June, this year. Power Minister Satyendar Jain had earlier predicted 7,000 MW power demand saying enough electricity was available to meet the rising demand.
Announcing the action plan for electricity supply arrangements in the summer months, Jain had, in March, said,"We have enough backhand arrangements to meet the power demand that is expected to soar up to a historic 7,000 MW level in June this year."
BSES discoms will get up to 665 MW of power through banking arrangements. Additionally, around 150 MW of renewable energy from Himachal Pradesh and around 20 MW from Rajasthan will further boost the power arrangements.
"Arrangements have been firmed up by BRPL and BYPL to source adequate electricity to meet the power demand of around 40 lakh consumers. These arrangements include long term PPAs and banking arrangements with other states, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu and Bhutan." said a BSES spokesperson.
A notification by Tata Power suggested that the peak demand on Thursday in North Delhi, was 1750 MW and it touched 1850 MW on Friday. In the coming days as temperature may further increase, it may touch 1950 MW. The power distribution company had made arrangements of approximately 2200 MW to meet the emergencies.
Worried over the power shortage in the Capital, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had recently written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal seeking their intervention into the "crisis-like" power situation developing in the capital due to coal shortage.
Kejriwal, in his letter, said that the high demand for power was due to the ongoing heatwave-like condition in Delhi. The amount of coal available in NCR, he said, was not even sufficient for one full day's power generation. Kejriwal requested the PM to give necessary directions to the railways for providing rakes/wagons on priority for transportation of coal.
