Amid charged up political campaigns and general pre-poll cacophony, the oldest Resident Welfare Association (RWA) in the Capital, the Mehrauli RWA, has come up with an interesting idea to help people pick up the best candidate.

Following the format of popular television show Aap Ki Adalat, the RWA has planned to hold Mehrauli Ki Adalat, wherein candidates from all political parties will be invited to interact with the residents.

"We will introduce each and every candidate from across the parties through this initiative. It's very important for residents of a locality to know about the candidates they will vote for on April 23," RWA President Sandeep Bali said.
"Each candidate will be given five minutes to talk about their plans for development for Mehrauli, followed by an open session in which locals will get an opportunity to ask questions," he said.

Candidates from all major political parties, including Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Janta Dal (United) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), have already registered for the event. "As the RWA, we don't support any political party. We just want the locals to select the best councillor for themselves," Bali said.

Hailing the RWA initivative, Merauli residents said the Adalat will help them compare the visions of all the parties. "This is the first time that all the candidates will come together on a podium. It will also give us an opportunity to evaluate and question their plans for Mehrauli," resident Vinit Dikshit said.

Mehrauli Mess
  • Locality has overflowing drains and dirty streets, giving rise to an unbearable stench.
  • A huge part of the area has been illegally occupied by street vendors.
  • The MCD community centre is so badly maintained that only 10 per cent of the population is using it.
  • There is no authorised MCD parking even though around two lakh people live in the area.
