Delhi rains throw traffic out of gear, cab fares go through the roof

Incessant rains have brought the national capital to a screeching halt.

The two hours of heavy rains in the afternoon and the continuous drizzle has thrown city traffic out of gear.

The Delhi Traffic Police's Twitter timeline is full of advisories to avoid major stretches.

From Modi Mill Flyover to Safdarjung, water-logging has been reported from many parts of the national capital. The traffic map on a Google map is all in red.

The fares of Ola and Uber have shot through the roof.

A ride from Noida to Jorbagh would set you back by Rs 500. Surge price and high demand means either the cabs are not available or are there for a very high fare.

The Safdarjung observatory of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded 3.8 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours, said a weather official.

Palam received 14.8 mm of rainfall during the same period.

The Met office has forecast light to moderate rains along with thundershowers during the day. "The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 33 degrees Celsius," the Met department said.
