With less than two months left for the Delhi assembly elections, the Congress and BJP have finalised their star campaigners which include film stars, celebrities and senior leaders.

While the BJP will be deploying Hema Malini, Smriti Irani, Suresh Oberoi, film and TV actress Vani Tripathi, Bhojpuri singer and actor Manoj Tiwari, cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu and Kirti Azad, the Congress is banking on Nagma, Punjabi pop singer Daler Mehndi, Raj Babbar and former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin to highlight its achievements.

A Congress insider told dna that people like to see Bollywood stars during the campaigns. “There are a number of actors who are our sympathisers. We will utilise their star power to woo voters,” he said. The BJP, too, admitted that it would unleash its ‘celebrities’ during the last phase of the election campaign.

With a lot at stake for both parties, they are relying on their senior leaders to aggressively campaign for the polls, but are planning to draw crowds by roping in stars during the fortnight before the elections. While the Congress plans to organise road shows and rallies led by Rahul Gandhi, the BJP intends to get Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi to address several rallies.

A senior Delhi BJP leader said the list of campaigners has yet to finalised, but some names have already been decided. “After Modi’s rally on September 29 turned out to be a huge success, the party is planning to organise more rallies of Modi,” he said.

The Congress expects its president Sonia Gandhi and prime minister Manmohan Singh to lead from the front.
