The Delhi Police has registered a case in connection with the recovery of a foetus from a lavatory of an AirAsia plane after it landed here from Guwahati on Wednesday, said a senior police officer.

A post-mortem was conducted on the foetus on Thursday to determine its gestational age, he said. It has also been revealed that the woman had taken antacid and painkillers a day before taking the flight.

When an alarm was raised by the cabin crew about the discovery of an abandoned foetus wrapped in toilet paper in one of the lavatories of the I5-784 Imphal-Guwahati-Delhi flight, while the aircraft was preparing to land in Delhi on Wednesday, a 19-year-old state-level taekwondo player had admitted that she had lost the foetus. The woman was sent for medical examination, but she refused it. The incident was also reported to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

The police have registered a case under Section 318 of the IPC, which pertains to "concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body" and is punishable with a maximum term of two years and a fine, he added. The case has not been registered against the player, he added.

The senior police officer said, " The woman was called for questioning again and she said that she felt a continuous pain a day before boarding her flight and therefore consumed painkillers and antacids which led to excessive bleeding. We are consulting doctors if the medicines she consumed can cause any complications." He also said that the there is a possibility that she might have sustained an injury while practicing Taekwondo that caused her child's death.

The woman was supposed to travel to South Korea on Friday for a tournament and was accompanied by her coach.
