On July 2, this sleepy lane in Burari town woke up to the chilling news of mass suicide by 11 members of Chundawat family that lived here. In just over two months, Galli no 2 in Sant Nagar has overcome its gory past and is now dining out on it.
A restaurant has sprung up in the vacant plot adjacent to the infamous home— a telling sign of life moving on. The bright neon sign and freshly painted walls give no indication of the dark reality of its neighbour.
A man in his 30s steps out to inspect the gleaming glass front door. It’s Sachin Kumar, the owner of Zaayka. “We needed a place to start our outlet and this was the only available spot in the vicinity,” he says. “This is a great location as it gets extremely crowded in the evening.” Most of his customers, he confides, are here out of curiosity about the human tragedy that took place next door.
“People talk about the house and its vicinity being haunted,” says Kumar. “I was warned not to open shop here, but I do not believe in all this. I have turned the neighbourhood’s infamy to my advantage.”
Instead of Galli no 2, ‘Jahan 11 lashein mili thi (The house were 11 corpses were found)’is the new landmark. “Whosoever comes to the area, it is only to see the house. They are here for the thrill of going to a supposedly haunted place,” says Madan Kumar, who lives in the lane. Behind the Chundawat house, a Paying Guest accommodation has also heaved a sigh of relief. Students in locality had vacated the PG within days of the incident out of fear.
