Following the Capital's first downpour in the wee hours of Saturday, nights are set to be colder in the Delhi-National Capital Region and it is very likely to see foggy days ahead, the Met department said on Sunday. "Over the next 3-4 days, minimum temperatures (night time) are likely to drop 2-4 degrees across Punjab, Haryana and Delhi-NCR. We are not expecting rainfall for the days ahead," said Charan Singh, Scientist, National Weather Forecasting Centre.

The rainfall brought down day temperatures in the city on Sunday. At Palam, the maximum temperature was 15.4 degree Celsius, which was four degrees below normal while minimum temperature was 13 degree Celsius.

Delhi recorded nearly 4mm of rainfall on Saturday, the first this winter, which came on the back of considerable snowfall in hill-states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The absence of snowfall in the hill-states and showers in Delhi-NCR coupled with easterly-southeasterly winds had led to a rise in evening temperatures in the Northern plains.

The Capital is finally experiencing a winter chill due to a strong Western Disturbance, that is passing over Jammu and Kashmir. A western disturbance is an extra tropical storm that originates in the Mediterranean Sea and travels eastwards carrying icy winds and heavy moisture. "Winter has been warmer this year due to feeble western disturbances and even due to global warming. The current western disturbance led to snowfall and rainfall as its position was further south to earlier ones, bring about cyclonic circulation. Once this western disturbance passes eastwards, temperatures will fall," said DS Pai, director, long-range weather forecasting centre, Pune.

Private weather forecaster Skymet also said that cold wave like conditions are likely over Northern Plains. "The humid easterly winds are likely to change direction during next 24 hours. The icy northerly winds from snow clad mountains will start blowing over the region, as a result drop in minimum temperatures by 4 to 5 degrees during 2 to 3 days can be expected, leading to cold wave conditions," Skymet said.
