In a commuter-friendly move, the Delhi Metro travellers can now pay the fares of feeder buses and a number of parking lots at Metro stations through their smart cards, the public transporter said on Sunday.

Delhi Metro, currently, has more than 200 feeder buses plying on over 40 routes to ferry commuters to the nearest Metro network. Around two lakh persons use the feeder bus service daily.

Besides, commuters can pay the parking charges through their smart cards at 13 parking lots at the Metro stations, including Vishwavidyalaya, Saket, Karkardooma, Dilshad Garden, Akshardham, Patel Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Rohini Sector 18 and 19, Shastri Park, Mewala Maharajpur, Old Faridabad and Sector 28.

A Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) statement said the move is aimed to expand the facility across all the Metro parking lots in future. The DMRC has also updated software in the Hand-Held Terminal, a device used to read the card and deduct the amount in feeder buses.

The new software will simplify the ticketing process in the feeder buses to save time. The minimum and maximum fares on feeder buses are Rs 5 and Rs 15. The project was first proposed to be done in time for the Commonwealth Games held in the city in 2010.

The DMRC, the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) and the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in order to roll out the pilot project for common mobility on 250 buses.

Delhi will become the first city to witness e-purse travel system that would perform transactions as low as Rs 5. The ridership of the DTC buses has come down to 30 lakh from over 45 lakh in just a span of three years. The officials also said that once the service is launched, people will get to buy and recharge their Metro smart cards at DTC's offices as well.
