The Delhi Metro celebrated its 23rd Foundation Day on Wednesday where Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, addressing the officers, said the agency can hand over its parking lots to the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and civic bodies.

“Parking space near metro stations is of utmost priority. If the Delhi Metro is not able to develop more parking spaces, they can hand over the job to DDA or the municipal corporations,” said Baijal. The LG also emphasised on the need to boost last-mile-connectivity in the city.

Metro authorities said that the final decision on this will rest with them.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has 160 metro stations, of which the parking lots at 97 stations are managed by them. It has a network of 213 kilometres across Delhi-NCR with seven corridors (lines).

The LG gave out annual awards to employees for their contribution in building various metro stations. The Chandni Chowk Metro station was adjudged the ‘Best Metro Station’. The Metro Women of the Year Award was given to Kumari Tara, Station Controller/Train Operator, Yamuna Bank Crew Control.

Apart from this, 44 more employees from various departments were awarded for their meritorious performance. An employee from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was also awarded for his contribution towards maintaining security in DMRC.

Analysis

As connectivity from the metro to the home is bad, more parking lots near metros will ease matters.

This could reduce the reliance on public transport such as auto and cycle rickshaws which clog up metro stations.
