A 27-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly snatching a security officer’s pistol at the main vehicle checking point just 300 metres from Terminal 3 of Delhi airport on Thursday night. Officers said that as the man tried to escape with the weapon, the armed commandos of the Central Industrial Security Force fired two shots, one at the ground and another in the air, to scare him. On being outnumbered by a fleet of security personnel, the man dropped the weapon and surrendered.

According to the police, the man has been identified as Shankar alias Amit, a resident of Sangam Vihar in south Delhi. CISF officers said that it was around 11.50 pm, when the personnel at the main vehicle checking point on the Central Spine Road that goes from Mahipalpur towards Terminal 3, spotted a vehicle speeding towards them.

“As the men asked the driver to stop, they saw that the man sitting beside next to the driver was thrashing him. On this, the driver stepped out of the car and the man took over the wheels of the sedan. Seeing this, CISF commandos approached the car and asked the man to step out. Seeing armed commandos, the man tried to take a U-turn and flee,” said a senior police officer.

An assistant sub-inspector from the CISF snatched the keys from the moving car, forcing the vehicle to come to a halt. The main road to the airport was also closed for some time until the suspect was caught and the threat was cleared. This led to serpentine queues of vehicles which were later cleared with the help of traffic police.

“The suspect then stepped out of the car and during a fist fight between him and CISF men, he snatched a pistol from one of the commandos. Seeing him try to flee from the spot with the weapon, the commandos fired a shot at the ground to scare him. The man dropped his weapons after the CISF men fired another shot in the air,” said an officer.

“We had received a PCR call reporting the incident and on reaching the spot, the police team identified the suspect. He was previously involved in a case of culpable homicide,” said Sanjay Bhatia, Deputy commissioner of police (IGIA).

Police overpowered him and arrested Shankar under section 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) of the Indian Penal code.

“He later said he was trying to carjack the taxi in which he had arrived,” said Bhatia.
