A man was arrested on January 6 from Hyderabad for the murder of his nephew, whose body was recovered on October 8 last year nearly three years after he was killed.

The body had been found buried in mud in the balcony of Kajal Gupta in Dabri. Her family had requested their 86-year-old landlord, Vikram Singh, to get the balcony of their three-storey flat renovated. During the renovation, labourers had found a human remains buried in the mud. Cops were alerted and the deceased was identified as 26-year-old Jai Prakash Maharana, a tenant who had earlier lived in the same building.

The accused, Bijay Kumar Maharana is Jai's maternal uncle and they both lived together in the building.

According to cops, a ceiling fan was used by Bijay to murder Jai. "However, it is yet to be recovered. Bijay said that he had done away with the murder weapon by throwing it in a drain nearby after cleaning it off blood," said a police official.

Source added that Bijay had changed his looks, moved to Hyderabad, cut contact from his family and was trying his luck in Telugu movies. Cops also said that Bijay was not fond of Jai's closeness with his girlfriend and that was the motive behind the murder.

It is Gupta's mother who lives in the house. She is still in shock with the events that have unfolded.

"On Wednesday, cops came to the house along with Bijay to recreate the crime scene. He had apparently used a fan, pulled down for repairs, to bludgeon Jai while he was asleep. He also told the cops that he had buried the body in the balcony and planted saplings in the mud to hide it," said Gupta, a bank employee.

She said that her family sleeps exactly where Jai was murdered and it has been a very spooky experience for them.

"Bijay didn't seem to have any remorse for what he had done. He also said that his sister, Jai's mother, had stayed in the house for a few days after Jai went missing. Of course, she had no idea that she was only a few feet away from her dead son," said the woman.

According to the landlord, Bijay had also spread rumours about Jai going missing to avoid any suspicion.

"He had told everyone that Jai had gone to Vaishno Devi and had locked his room from outside. The balcony where the body had been buried could only be accessed from Jai's room," said Singh.

Cops have brought Bijay to Delhi on transit remand. He was produced before a magistrate and later sent to jail.
