A team of 146 police personnel of South District's Mehrauli nabbed a team of dangerous robber-cum-snatcher by skillfully predicting its crime trend, the police said on Tuesday.

Following the increasing complaints of robberies and snatching in South Delhi's Malviya Nagar, Saket, Neb Sarai, Mehrauli and Fatehpur Beri Police Station, 146 armed police personnel were deployed in the various places that the accused persons targeted.

Investigations into the complaints registered revealed that a few things were constant in all FIRs - a white Apache bike, male victims with heavy gold chains and wallets, elderly people targeted in the morning hours and all these incidents were taking place inside residential colonies. It was also noticed that the accused would follow identical routes to move back and forth and wore helmets with distinct markings on them. The incidents were also taking place only in Malviya Nagar, Saket, Neb Sarai, Mehrauli and Fatehpur Beri Police Station areas.

"In a first of its kind, we formed a common team communication network for sharing information using wireless network and Whatsapp groups were formed for sharing live location. All teams were armed to retaliate in case of firing and thoroughly brief about what they were after. After five days of camping in these areas, were able to nab one of the two accused," said Romil Baaniya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South District)

The accused have been identified as Vineet Verma (26), a resident of Ghaziabad, and Amit.

On July 11, one of the teams spotted the snatchers and immediately sent information along with their live location to the other teams. Secretly following the snatchers, the team encircled the bike but one accused Amit started shooting at the officials and missed. Following this, the officials tackled the accused persons but Amit fled after shooting twice at the team.

During interrogation, Verma revealed that Amit was a desperate snatcher. They were classmates and started committing these crimes together. Verma has served time in jail for cases of robbery and snatching previously and Amit was on parole from jail since last month to aid his wife's medical treatment.

The police recovered one firearm with two live cartridges, one White apache motorcycle (stolen) and seven gold chains. The apprehension of Verma has helped police solve 23 cases. The investigation is in progress to arrest the absconding.
