Delhi: Heavy vehicles exempted from toll

The entry of heavy vehicles barring the essential commodities vehicle was banned for four days. Out of 6202 vehicles which were checked, 2271 were returned from the border.

The Environment Pollution Prevention and Control Authority (EPCA) on Monday directed that all the heavy vehicles entering capital city will not have to pay the toll charges. The direction came after the overall air quality index continued to remain in severe category. The pollution authority says this move may help in reducing the pollution.

It also added that no new trucks will be allowed to enter Delhi and only those who are already in queue will be allowed.

"All the trucks at the border will be allowed to enter Delhi but will not be asked to stop to pay toll or ECC for this period from November 12th 11pm to November 13th 7am. The Delhi Police will increase their manpower at all entry points and that the number of trucks entering are limited to those that are already at the entry gates of the borders," stated the EPCA in a notification issue on Monday.

Since November 8 night the entry of heavy vehicles barring essential commodities was banned considering the severe air quality. Discussions were alos being held to allow the entry doing day time however the Delhi Traffic Police stated that the congestion would increase during day time and tarffic would be thrown out of gear. Moreover the chance of accidents and untoward incidents will also increase.

Owing to the ban on the entry of heavy vehicles around 2271 heavy and medium goods vehicles were sent back from various border points in the National Capital. "Around 6202 vehicles were checked and 3,931 vehicles were allowed entry as they were carrying essential commodities," said a senior Delhi Traffic Police (DTP) official.

However, vehicles carrying vegetables, fruits, grains, milk, eggs, ice etc, and tankers carrying petroleum products are exempted from the ban.
