The Delhi High Court on Monday set aside the conviction of Peepli Live co-director Mahmood Farooqui in the US researcher rape case.

Farooqui had challenged his conviction and seven-year jail term given by the trial court.

His conviction was set aside giving him a benefit of doubt. Farooqui is at present lodged at the Tihar jail.

The high court also raised the question whether the accused understood the consent or not and therefore, gave benefit of doubt to the accused.

During the arguments, Farooqui's lawyer had denied the allegation of rape levelled by the woman and said 'no such incident took place on that day'.

A trial court had on August 4 last year sent him to jail for seven years and had also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 for raping the American woman in 2015 in a drunken state.
