Following the footsteps of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) in Amritsar the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee will now set up biogas plants in all the gurudwara complexes in Delhi. The form of energy is considered as one of the most environment friendly and can also be procured easily.

The committee had been facing various issues in waste management, the kitchen waste like waste vegetable, fruit peels and leftover langar food was usually thrown away in quintals on daily basis, however once the bio-gas plants are established, this waste would help in generating the energy good enough to cook the langar food in Delhi Gurudwaras.

For now the gurudwara are dependent on the natural gas supplied through pipelines by IGL, which has been costing a lot to these historic gurudwaras moreover the move to opt for biogas would reduce carbon footrpints and make these holy places environment friendly.

In the beginning, the biogas plants will be set up at Delhi's Gurudwara Rakab Ganj Sahib and Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, as the committee found these gurudrwaras to be generating largest biodegrable waste among all gurudwaras in Delhi.

While the management committee is expecting that these plants would be fully operational by October 2018, it is to be noted that both the gurudwaras have been serving over 30,000 devotees with the langar food.

About a months and half ago the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee in Amritsar had announced that the meal served in Golden temple would be cooked with biogas and the dependency on natural gas will be lifted, following which the management committee in Delhi decided to get away from the expensive and not so eco friendly form of gas.
