With the arrest of three women, the Delhi police have claimed to have solved a case of theft gold jewelry worth Rs 2.4 lakh in metro units on Saturday.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Metro) Deepak Gaur, three women — Rita (45), Poonam (22) and Suman (22) — have been arrested. "A complaint was received on August 7 from two female passengers, who were on the way from Rajiv Chowk metro station to Akshardham metro station. The train was crowded. The two sisters kept their bag on shoulder. At Indraprastha metro station, three women boarded the metro and stood along with the sisters. When they deboarded the metro train at the Akshardham metro station, she realised that the zip of the bags of her and her sister was found open," Gaur stated.

"When they checked the bag, eight gold bangles amounting to Rs 2.4 lakh and Rs 30,000 cash was found stolen. She suspected that the women who boarded the metro at Indraprastha metro station and were standing along with her had stolen their jewelry and cash and filed a complaint," Gaur said. Following which, an FIR was registered at the metro police station at Yamuna Bank station.

Based on the CCTV footages, police identified them and arrested them on Saturday from their shanties in Anand Parbat. "All the stolen jewelry and cash has been recovered from their shanties," police said.

During interrogation, it was revealed that they used to commit the crime in a group of two or three. "First, they target a passenger with a bag on the shoulder in a crowded metro and one of them covers the bag with her saree and another opens the zip of the bag and steals the items in the bag," police said.
