In a boost to the state education system, the Delhi government on Wednesday decided to restructure and upgrade two key institutions in charge of teachers’ education — the State Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT) and the District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs).

The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Manish Sisodia. “Recognising the primacy of building strong academic and institutional foundation for the series of reform initiatives in education being introduced by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi, the government has decided to restructure and strengthen the SCERT and the DIETs,” Sisodia said.

The SCERT and the DIETs have been supporting school education in the national Capital since 1980s by organising various programmes, including pre-service and in-service education of teachers, development of appropriate curriculum and material for teachers and students, and undertaking research on problems related to school education.

“In addition, it has also been decided to open two new DIETs in Delhi, which would offer Diploma in Pre-School Education courses at all DIETs, and BEd degree courses at three DIETs,” he said.

Earlier, the Delhi government had decided to substantially increase the number of academic faculty positions at the SCERT and the DIETs from the current 240 to over 600 to enable these institutions to better serve their objectives.

Besides, in order to attract best talent to Delhi, it was also decided that pay-scales and qualifications for faculty to UGC levels will also upgraded, following the footsteps of the National Council Of Educational Research And Training (NCERT).

The entire restructuring exercise will be carried out under the advice of an Expert Committee set up by the SCERT, and under the guidelines of the Ministry of Human Resource Development’s (MHRD) Centrally-sponsored scheme on teacher education.
