The 'rent-a-roof' model for solar power generation which has been adopted by the city of Gandhinagar in Gujarat can for now only be replicated in government buildings in the national capital, Delhi government has said.

According to environment department officials, as most private buildings in the city are not properly aligned, unlike in Gandhinagar, which is a planned city with buildings of similar height and size, 'the rent-a-roof' model can only be implemented in government buildings, offices and hospitals. Delhi government officials recently visited Gujarat to study the electricity generation system there.

A report on Gujarat's solar power projects, which is being readied for submission to the Delhi Lt Governor, says that the project, if successful, "can be extended to individuals and to the private sector". "The experts recommended setting up of Solar Photo Voltaic (SPV) projects on dry drains, canals, river beds. The Irrigation and Flood Control department and DDA may be asked to identify land suitable for such projects," the report adds.

Meanwhile, Delhi government also held a meeting to discuss the solar power policy today in which officials from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) were also present.
