Delhi Government's Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital in East Delhi received 200 more beds on Tuesday, announced the State Health Minister Satyendra Jain. The hospital will now have 850 beds, as compared to the previous 650. Jain also inaugurated X-ray, CT-Scan, and Cath Lab at the hospital.
Nine years after the inauguration, Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital of the Delhi government barely had the required 'specialized' staff and facilities to cater to the treatment goals they were expected to achieve. The hospital has only partially been able to perform laboratory tests for Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology and Gastroenterology in which it specializes.
With the new Cath lab, the hospital will now be able to perform Angiography and Angioplasty.
"Soon this hospital will be listed among the top 10 hospitals in the country. I have also asked the hospital authorities to introduce yoga, meditation, dance, and physiotherapy facilities for better doctor-patient relationship," said Jain.
A large part of the hospital building has remained deserted since its inception. Thousands of people wait outside the AIIMS and Safdarjung hospitals for treatment while hospitals like Janakpuri and Rajiv Gandhi have shown bad planning and vision.
"We are conducting walk-in interviews for different departments and hopefully will be able to hire staff to run the cardio-thoracic department. We have never been able to run the department due to lack of resources," said Dr BL Sherwal, Medical Director, Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital.
Despite Sherwal's statement, internal sources confirm that there used to be a cardio-thoracic department (CTVS) on the ground floor with three doctors, but due to unavailability of staff, the doctors left to join private hospitals.
Recently, the Rheumatology department, again on the ground floor closed too whereas Heart Transplant machines are lying on the second floor, but there is no one to use the entire unit.
