"Never expected my first emergency encounter to be that of my father's on a wheelchair with a bullet injury on his hand laughing and trying to calm us down," said Komal Kadian, a doctor and daughter of sub-inspector (SI) Krishan who sustained an injury during an encounter in South Delhi on Saturday. Of the six police officers who sustained bullet wounds in the encounter, the bullet of only one of them came out on its own while the doctors are thinking of the next logical step to take for further treatment.

The family members of the other injured police officers smile as they talk about their father's heroic act, but also add that the time they spent with their family is minimal.

"Around 2 pm I received a call from my father. He told me he had received minor injuries and would be coming to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment.

Since he knew I would be at Safdarjung which is close by he called me once. We as a family are aware of his profession and thought he must have sustained some injury but we were not aware that he actually had a gunshot wound," said Komal.

Komal reached the hospital much before her father and went blank when she saw him in a wheelchair with a gunshot wound and smiling. "He said choti-moti chot hai (it is a minor injury). The eldest among three siblings had mixed emotions at that point in time. "It was my first emergency encounter and despite all that you learn, you know it is different when the person in front of you is your father. He was unable to move his hand but was laughing and talking normally, trying to keep us calm. We are glad he is stable, the bullets are in his hand and the doctors would be deciding on the next course of treatment," said Komal. She added that the previous night he had told them he would be leaving at 5 am for work.

Her two younger brothers Prashant and Kartik stood around her and looked fine but worried about their father's health. "We have all grown up listening to stories of cops, only to see him like this was an altogether different experience," said Kartik.

Akash Choudhary, son of SI Raj Singh and Ashish Deshwal son of SI Vijendra developed their friendship as the fathers of the two have been working with the Special Cell for the past 15 years. On Sunday, they stood outside the Emergency of AIIMS as their fathers sustained bullet wounds during the encounter. While Deshwal feels that the time they get to spend with the family is less but after the encounter, we feel proud of him and the entire police force.

For Choudhary, emotions ran through his brains when he saw him on Sunday morning. "He called my mother and told her he was injured, no mention about the bullet wounds or the encounter. I saw him today morning and it is the best feeling to know that he is safe and did something for the country which makes all of us proud," he said.
