Delhiites should get set for June-like March. According to an advisory issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) temperatures are going to soar to above normal in the rest of March — in sharp contrast to what is normally a pleasant month of the year. In fact, the IMD has stated that temperatures will be so hot that people should take appropriate measures to keep themselves hydrated.

According to senior officials, a change in the wind pattern over north India has caused the temperatures to rise. There is a Western Disturbance, with the north-westerly winds moving in the opposite direction bringing dry, hot winds with it.

"The day and night temperatures in most of North India are likely to remain above normal for this time of the year. The maximum temperature is expected to touch 36 degrees Celsius over the weekend with dry winds prevailing over the entire north-western plains. The temperature is expected to return to normal in the first week of April," said scientist-in-charge, Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) R Vishen.

The Capital has already seen temperatures go beyond normal for this time of the year. The maximum temperature recorded on Tuesday was 33 degrees, three degrees above normal. On Monday, the maximum temperature was 30.6 degrees.

This forecast is in sharp contrast to the first half of the month, as till March 15 the day and night temperatures in Delhi had remained below normal resulting in surprisingly pleasant weather. Day temperatures have hovered between 20 degrees Celsius and 22 degrees Celsius while night temperatures have remained around 10 degrees Celsius. In fact, March 14 was the coldest March day in five years. Already some Delhiites have started complaining about the heat. Aneesha Malhotra, a Delhi University student said, temperatures had started soaring in the Capital well before the scheduled time. "March is supposed to be a pleasant month before the real summer heat begins in April. In fact, we have been feeling it getting hotter over the last few days," she said.

The growing heat wave is also likely to have another factor. Weather officials say that by March 23, parts of Punjab, Haryana and isolated pockets in Delhi NCR are likely to witness thunderstorms.
