Delhi: Driver flees to escape public wrath

The Ganesh idol visarjan took a tragic turn for 23-year-old aspiring chef Rahul Kushwah when he was killed in an accident on Saturday night. Deceased Rahul Kushwah who returned home early to participate in the idol immersion was dragged on a cab's bonnet, before his friend could rescue him from the speeding car.

According to the deceased's friend, an eyewitness, the incident took place at around 9:30pm near NH-24 when we Kushwah along with a group of 40 people were heading for visarjan.

"We were a group of 30-40 friends and locals who were heading in a festive mood. A Swift Dzire cab allegedly hit one of the man of the group. As the cab driver, who seemed to be drunk, and accompanied by four others started arguing, all of us surrounded his car so that he could not escape. Kushwah got onto the bonnet of the car. It was then, that the cab driver suddenly started the car and accelerated," said Rahul Kashyap, deceased's friend.

Eyewitness somehow managed to get out of the way of the vehicles but Kushwah was stuck on the bonnet.

"We tried to chased him but the driver sped away towards Mayur Vihar. We managed to find Kushwah about two kilometers away lying on the road, with passersby and police on the spot. Kushwah's left hand had cut off. His face was badly damaged and he had severe injuries in back. He was rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital where the doctors declared him deaded," said Kashyap.

Police said that the driver escaped the spot may be out of fear of being lynched by the crowd.

According to Pankaj Singh, Deputy commissioner of police (East), they are now trying to identify the driver and the vehicle.

"We have registered a case under sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code based on the families allegations and statements. We are yet to ascertain the fact that he was run over by the same vehicle on which he had got on. We have scanned CCTV footage from the area and further investigation is underway," said Singh.

Family members further said that the police have assured them the accused driver will be arrested within 24 hours.

"We have the number of the car but the police are still investigating. The number we noted down is DL1ZC 0870. We want the police to immediately make arrest," said Pinki, the deceased's sister.

According to the deceased's mother, Kushwah came back home from work at around 8:30pm and met her at the market area. "He handed over his back to me and said that he was going to take part in Ganesha idol immersion. with many others from the neighbourhood to take part in Ganesha idol immersion. Despite asking him to accompany me home, he didn't listen and he went with his friends," said the deceased's mother, who did not wish to be named.
