Two wanted criminals from an infamous gang of Mewat in Haryana were arrested on Monday by the Delhi Police from Pancharipuri following a brief shootout. The police identified the men as Wazid alias Wazzi and Nadeem alias Golu and said that both are residents of Haryana's Palwal district.

They belonged to the Tohid gang of Mewat which was involved in several cases of kidnapping and extortion. The police also recovered two country-made pistols, two fired cartridges, four live cartridges and a stolen Maruti Suzuki Swift car from their possession.

According to the police, the gang used to approach wealthy businessmen from different parts of the country on the pretext of selling them scraps at cheap prices in Delhi and Mewat. "They were luring potential targets through the 'Scrapo' mobile phone app. However, on meeting, they would rob the businessman directly and sometimes also kidnap the person and extort money," said Alok Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch.

The police acted on a complaint filed by a businessman from Indore at the Domestic Airport Police Station in April this year who had been a victim. The police said that the complainant had been received by two of the gang members at the airport and then taken to the Gohana village in Mewat on the pretext of showing him the scraps.

"But there he was confined in a room and was robbed of his mobile phone, cash and other belongings. They also forcibly took his debit card and withdrew Rs 1,40,000 from an ATM," the police said.

The police registered a case and set up a team under the Inter-State Cell to begin the investigation.
