On the occasion of Children’s Day on Wednesday, the Delhi police reunited missing children with their families. It was possible by a fortnight-long joint drive launched by a team of crime branch and an NGO Sathi on 1 November.

At least 31 children were rescued from the railway stations and ISBT Delhi, out of which 17 were reunited with there families.  It was an emotional get-together. Some children offered to share their ordeal and happiness on being rescued. Some parents and family members of these children also shared their struggle and distress after their child went missing, said a senior police official.

Efforts are being made to trace the family members of the remaining kids. These children, all boys, had either run away from their homes or had been abandoned by their guardians and had landed up in Delhi. Most were clueless about their whereabouts and had no idea about their future. They had no place to go.

The Crime Branch managed to rescue them before they could fall into the wrong hands. On the occasion of Children’s Day, no gift better than this could have been given to these children and their families.

Anti Human Trafficking Units ACP Surender Gulia, comprising of Inspector Mahesh Pandey and his teams along with representatives of Sathi, NGO worked tirelessly to round up these missing children.

“Most of the children had little information about their homes. Some children were residents of far-away places in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Each child had a different story to tell. Some had been abandoned while others had left home after a scolding from their family members,” said Additional CP, Crime Branch, Rajiv Ranjan.

“Most children had boarded a train without a ticket and had reached railway stations in Delhi by default. All children belonged to the economically weaker sections of society and almost all were school dropouts,” Additional CP added. Each child was given a school bag with some books and clothes. All representatives of Sathi, NGO were felicitated and a small gift and a letter of appreciation were given to each of them.
