The Special Cell of the Delhi Police has arrested one of the biggest suppliers of arms and ammunition to Naxals in Madhya Pradesh. Richhpal Singh, 48, was actively supplying arms to Naxals and had also been arrested by the Andhra police in 2006 for the same. Not just this, he had also opened a factory in the Burhanpur region of MP.

Police say that Singh, who has been in the business for the last 30 years, has claimed his ancestors have been in the business for the last 80 years.

"He has links with Maoists in Telengana and he supplied arms and hand- grenades to them. Singh had supplied three pistols, 28 live cartridges and two country-made hand grenades to Maoists of CPI (ML) Praja Prathigatane faction in the year 2006. Later on, he and two of his associates were arrested," said Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, DCP, Special Cell. Yadav added that Singh was granted bail in the case but he, subsequently, did not attend court and was later declared a proclaimed offender.

Singh was arrested from North Delhi's Burari area on Monday after a brief scuffle with cops wherein he fired two rounds at the police party. Eleven pistols and 14 live cartridges were recovered from his possession. He was also wanted in four cases of the Arms Act registered with the Special Cell. Apart from this, he is involved in more than 10 cases of the Arms Act, Explosive Substance Act, murder, attempt to murder, dacoity in MP, Delhi, Telengana and Maharashtra.

The Delhi Police have declared a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his arrest.

Police say that Singh makes the pistols for a sum of Rs 3,000 and later supplies them at Rs 10,000 in bulk. By the time the criminals get it, the cost of the pistols increases to Rs 25,000- 30,000 for a pistol.

A team of Special Cell officers was closely monitoring the trade of illegal weapons and during surveillance it came to the fore that the weapons were being sent to Delhi from the areas of Khargaon, Dhar, Munger (Bihar) and Burhanpur (MP). In the last six months, the cell has busted four different modules of Singh but were unable to arrest him. Seven persons of Singh's racket were arrested and 117 semi-automatic pistols were recovered.

Police officials revealed that a Delhi police team then camped in Burhanpur to arrest Singh but since he knew the police was trailing him, he went underground for two weeks. Later on, information was received that Singh would come to supply weapons in the Capital.

Singh told police that he has been involved in the trade of manufacturing arms and ammunition for the last 30 years. When he was young he had learnt the art of making weapons from his forefathers. Singh also has a leith machine in his village in Pachori, MP. His father Prem Singh, and his six brothers, have been indulging in manufacturing of illegal arms in the village. Earlier the Cell arrested two of his brother Mani Singh and Rajpal Singh. Singh was also convicted for six years imprisonment in two cases of Arms Act in MP.
