Traffic violators in Delhi are finding it difficult to escape the long arm of the law. Data from the police show a traffic challan is issued every five seconds, on average, in the Capital, doubling the rate of prosecution since last year.

Senior traffic police officers said the step is a part of a special drive to maintain discipline on the Delhi roads and keep hooliganism at bay. They also said the stricter vigil has drastically reduced the number of accidents and fatalities on Delhi roads.

For the first 45 days in this year, 7,61,951 challans were issues by the traffic police. The number is more than twice that in the same period last year, when 3,38,082 challans were issued.

"In February alone this year, average daily prosecutions by the traffic police were recorded to be 17,963. This means more than 748 challans an hour. If data of the first 45 days of this and the previous year is compared, last year only 5 challans were issued at an average every minute while this year the police was able to take the numbers significantly up to 11. This has also helped in reducing menace on Delhi roads," said a senior police officer.

The officer said that in the first two months of 2016, the total number of fatal accidents was 273 and persons killed was 280. However, this year in the first two months, number of fatal accidents came down to 178 while the number of persons killed was significantly reduced to 180, the officer said.

"Every year we have more vehicles on the road and it has been seen that it is mostly youngsters who go without helmet, triple-riding, and over-speed," said Garima Bhatnagar, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic). "This year, from the beginning we decided to bring discipline on the road and create pressure on such people to make them abide by the traffic norms, which has resulted in this drastic jump."

"So far, it seems to be working better this time. The drive is one of the major reasons for letting Delhiites commit less mistakes on road which leads to lesser accidents. We will continue to maintain the high road discipline as the CP is very clear that he wants high visibility throughout Delhi and we are concentrating on all the areas of the capital, specially the outskirts where larger number of accidents are recorded," Bhatnagar said.
