A 26-year old journalist was allegedly molested after a man seated next to her in an ongoing bus flashed his private parts at her while she was on her way home in South Delhi’s Mehrauli area on Tuesday. When the woman objected he held her hand and tried to push her. The incident also raises question on safety and security of the woman in buses.
The victim was travelling on bus route 717 from Kapashera to Badarpur around 9:15pm on Tuesday. The accused identified as Mukesh Ranjan Kumar (39) was arrested by the police. Narrating her ordeal the victim stated that she was sitting on the ladies seat when the accused boarded the bus from mata Chowki in Mahipalpur. “The man next to me was sleeping. Suddenly a man the bus and came and stood near me.
He was doing weird gestures and staring at me. In order to scare him I stared back. The man continued looking through my face after which he just took out his private part and flashed at me,” said the victim.
The victim then raised an alarm and caught hold of the accused by his collar. To ensure he does not run away, the victim thrashed him and made him sit on his seat. “The bus had around 40 passengers but none came forward to help me. Infact there were people who told me not to hit the accused with my sandal. I called up ‘100’ and informed the police,” said the victim.
The victim further stated that there was a person who helped her but later when the police officials asked him to become a witness he refused and left. The police have registered a case under section 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) at Mehrauli police station.
