For 18-year-old Tejveer Singh, a wrestling aspirant, the four years between 2011 and 2015, had been extremely painful and dark. He had fought Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). ALL occurs when a bone marrow cell develops errors in the DNA and can be treated only by bone marrow transplant. When no one from his family matched as a donor, Singh opted for MUD-matched unrelated donor. This is when the family found Zorawar Singh, a daily wage carpenter in Delhi, who matched as Tejveer's donor.

Singh always wanted to represent India in the Olympics in wrestling, but his illness was making it impossible to practice. An aspirant from Hisar in Haryana, he came down to Delhi and was operated upon. Now, three years later, Tejveer is leading a healthy life. He met his saviour and thanked him.

As per government norms, a registry cannot disclose the identity of the donor and recipient to each other for a year after the transplant.

"I have met my real-life hero today, and I am overjoyed, blessed and cheerful to get an opportunity to spend quality time with my gene-buddy. It is rightly said, a friend in need is a friend indeed," said Tejveer.

"Every year, India has 1.2 million cases of cancer and life-threatening blood disorders like thalassemia and a plastic anaemia. These disorders and many more can easily be treated with a bone-marrow transplant.

Stem cells from donors at the right time can save 60-80 per cent of children with cancers and blood disorders. We, at GeneBandhu, strive to rise above the fear of blood disorders by providing a ready solution to all blood disorders, and by building an extensive and diversified data pool of voluntary stem cells donors and aspire to see the next transplantation under Rs 10 lakh," said Dr Vimarsh Raina, Founder and President, GeneBandhu.
