People in the Capital are gearing up for much colder nights, expected to start from Tuesday evening. In the coming week, the city is likely to come under a cold wave condition, along with other parts of northern India, including Haryana, Punjab, and north Rajasthan.

The minimum temperature in Delhi is expected to dip to four degrees Celsius from January 10-13, making it the season’s coldest week, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials.

The Capital and parts of Northern India have been experiencing warmer winters over the last five years. So far this season, the day temperatures have remained in the higher range. The maximum and minimum temperatures in Delhi, over the weekend, remained around 14 degrees Celsius and 7 degrees Celsius, respectively.

But now, both day and night temperatures are expected to fall by 2-4 degrees Celsius. “With the eastward movement of the current Western Disturbance, because of an upper air cyclonic circulation lying over north Pakistan and neighbourhood, dry cold winds are likely to prevail over plains of northwest India from the night of January 10 to 13,” said a scientist from the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).

Also, dense fog is likely to cover parts of the National Capital Region (NCR) on Tuesday morning, reducing visibility to less than 500m, which is likely to be lifted by 11 am.

R Vishen, Scientist-in-charge, Meteorological Department, Delhi, said: “Under these circumstances, the prevailing minimum temperatures over the plains of northwest India are very likely to fall further by 2-4 degrees Celsius till morning of January 13.” He added that during this period, severe cold wave conditions are likely to prevail over Punjab, Haryana, and northern parts of Rajasthan.

The cold wave conditions are also likely to prevail at isolated places over west Uttar Pradesh between January 11 and 13.

Due to normal wind speed, the air quality in Delhi had become relatively better in the last few days but environmentalists now fear that a fall in temperature may bring down the air quality as well.

Meanwhile on Monday, Delhi Environment Minister Imran Husssain reviewed the steps being taken by various Delhi government agencies to combat air pollution. The Minister observed that though the agencies were taking action against violators, there was a pressing need to intensify the inspections. He also urged the departments to increase the vigil during this period, as complaints of garbage burning were still being reported around the city.
