The second phase of Barapullah flyover will be thrown open to the public with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal inaugurating the much-awaited 2.5 km stretch on July 28.
This means the travelling time from Sarai Kale Khan to All India Institute for Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will be reduced to just 15 minutes against the existing 35 minutes.
According to the officials, the work on the second phase is almost completed and the authorities are just giving a final touch to the pending work. The status of the flyover has been submitted to the CM and the Public Works Department (PWD) is now working on the inaugural ceremony.
"The flyover will be open from July 28 for the commuters. The stretch will ease out the traffic movement. The signal free road will reduce the travelling time for many commuters travelling from Sarai Kale Khan to AIIMS, and one can now directly reach Barapullah from Dhaula Kuan in no time," said a senior PWD official.
The work on phase two of the flyover started in 2013 and was to be completed in 2015. The project, however, missed several deadlines and was rescheduled to be operational from September 2017. Due to delay in the progress, it once again missed the deadline. "The deadline was earlier extended to March 2018. But due to some technical reasons, the work on the phase got delayed," added the official.
The total cost of the project is Rs 530 crores. The entire corridor of Barapullah flyovers, which consists of four phases, will be a signal-free stretch for commuters travelling between East Delhi and the Indira Gandhi International Airport.
The 4 km stretch under phase I of the Barapullah elevated road, connecting Sarai Kale Khan and JLN Stadium has been operational since 2010 Commonwealth Games. In phase II, the corridor is being extended by 2 km from JLN Stadium to INA market. Under phase III, a 3.5km stretch from Mayur Vihar Phase I to Sarai Kale Khan has been added which is expected to be completed by 2020.
The first outcome budget of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government presented in the Assembly this year revealed a delay in the execution of the signal-free Barapullah phase III stretch by the PWD.
