The Delhi Police Crime Branch arrested a 35-year-old fugitive sharp-shooter from North West Delhi's Begumpur Chowk after a brief scuffle on Monday. The police identified the arrested man as Deepak alias Praveen Koli alias Pappi alias Sanil and said that he belonged to the notorious gang of Hitender Singh Rawat alias Chotu of Ghaziabad.

Deepak had jumped his interim bail of three months for a murder case of 2007 and was carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his arrest. The police also recovered one pistol, three live cartridges and a stolen motorcycle from his possession.

According to the police, the Crime Branch recently received secret inputs about a plan of multiple robberies in the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR) by members of the Hitender Singh Rawat gang in order to finance their associates lodged in jail and to meet other expenses. "We immediately acted on the information and formed a team to foil their plan and nab the accused,"said Alok Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch.

Accordingly, the police team laid a trap on Monday near the Begumpur Chowk and with the help of a local informer spotted a man riding a motorcycle. On asked to stop, the man whipped out a pistol and tried to fire at the police team. However, before he could do so, the police team overpowered the man and apprehended him successfully.

"On interrogation, the accused revealed his identity and said that he worked as a sharp-shooter for the Hitender Singh Rawat gang. The police also recovered a pistol and three live cartridges from him. A case was then registered under the Arms Act at the Crime Branch police Station", said a senior police official.

On sustained interrogation, Deepak further revealed that he had been convicted in a murder case of Hauz Qazi Police Station back in 2007 and was granted a three-week interim bail on March 20 this year. However, he did not surrender before the police within the stipulated date and went missing in order to form another gang.

The police are now investigating the other aspects of the case in order to arrest the other members of the gang.
