Delhi: 26-year-old rape, kidnapping case reopened with man's arrest

An over 26-year-old case has been reopened in a Delhi court with the arrest of a proclaimed offender who was accused of raping and kidnapping a minor girl and had jumped bail during the trial.

46-year-old Suresh, a resident of Pandav Nagar, was arrested by Delhi Police on January 6 from RK Puram in South Delhi and produced before a metropolitan magistrate who remanded him to judicial custody and sent the case before the concerned sessions court.

The trial in the 1988 case would now be reopened in the court of Additional Sessions Judge Sarita Birbal who has fixed the case for further proceedings on January 12.

According to the prosecution, a complaint was lodged by the parents of the girl, who was 14-year-old at the time of the incident in 1988, alleging that their daughter has been missing since November 22, 1988 and they suspected Suresh behind this.

A case of kidnapping, abducting a woman to compel her for marriage and rape was registered against Suresh and he was arrested by the police on November 26, 1988. The girl was also rescued.
