Delhi: 20th Bharat Rang Mahotsav serves a slice of life

The youth forum at the 20th Bharat Rang Mahotsav presented the plight of male rape survivors in a play titled "Mr" on the second day of the international theatre festival being held at the National School of Drama. Staged by Navrang — theatre society of the Institute of Home Economics — the play portrayed unspoken shame, disgust, complex and reluctance on part of the victims. It also brought out a separate aspect of the different circumstances that can lead to such a crime.

Another played titled "Trash", by DramaNomics — theatre society of the College of Vocational Studies — protested against the effects of plastic pollution. It gave a practical view of the irrecoverable destruction that has already happened and attempts to inspire the audiences to seriously look at the alternatives to prevent plastic pollution.

The ambience performances at the Bahwalpur House on NSD campus saw phaag maibe, and manjeera dances. Phaag is a folk dance of Haryana performed by the agrarian people to express their joy. Manjeera, a folk dance of Rajasthan, was performed by Suresh Vyas's troupe and it enthralled the audience.

Among other plays was Bol, a Bengali play directed by Ashis Chattopadhyay, based on the happenings at Montsou Colliery. It was a parable of the love-hate relationship between human beings and the Earth.

Katha Ek Kans Ki, a Hindi play by Arvind Singh, described the journey of a child from being a kind-hearted prince, who could jump into the river to fetch his sister's doll, to becoming a cruel king, who later imprisoned the same sister.

Directed by Urmil Kumar Thapaliyal, Harishchannar Ki Ladia, was a Hindi play with two parallel stories.

Mohit Takalkar's Hindi-Urdu solo act Mathemagician, was set in 500 CE Babylon. Based on a character, who is castrated and pushed into slavery by his father is apprenticed to the Greek Plautus, the Chief Economist of Babylon. With his brilliance in mathematics and statecraft, he attains incredible fame and wealth as the state's chief mathematician, accountant general and keeper of the seals.
