In yet another case of assault at a Delhi government hospital, a Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital resident doctor was beaten up by the attendants of a patient, leading to all the resident doctors going on strike demanding better security. Patient care has been affected at the hospital since Out-Patient Departments remained dysfunctional on Friday leading to patients moving to other hospitals for treatment.

On Thursday, a female patient was brought to DDU by two of her relatives. Both the men, while waiting when their patient was being treated, abused the lady doctor on-duty. This led to an argument between the doctors and the patient's attendant and the police were called. Complaints have been registered against the two attendants and a doctor.

"Following the protocol, we called the police helpline from the CMO's landline (which means it's a call from the hospital) five times, but nobody picked up or returned the call," said Dr Gursimar Singh, president, Resident Doctors' Association, DDU.

"The constable, Ashok Kumar, who came later, was under the influence of alcohol and dragged a senior resident doctor and everyone to the police station, where the attendants beat up the doctor again in front of the cops," he said.

Dr Arnav, a resident doctor at the hospital, had come to help the lady doctor during the verbal assault by the attendant but got into trouble when he went to the police station and was badly beaten up there. Following this, the doctors have now announced indefinite strike until the security is increased at the hospital.

"Yesterday night, one female patient was admitted in DDU. On the pretext of delay, her husband Sunil and husband's brother argued and shouted at a female doctor treating the patient. MLC has been created. While the attendant's complaint against Dr Arnav, the lady doctor registered her complaint against the duo, necessary action on both the complaints is being taken," Vijay Kumar, Delhi Commissioner of Police, West Delhi.
