Doctors at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital have announced to go on a strike from Wednesday, which will see a total shutdown of Emergency services. They are demanding an institutional FIR to be lodged for an assault on a resident doctor.

In yet another case of assault at a Delhi government hospital, a junior resident doctor at the DDU hospital was beaten-up by the relatives of a patient on Sunday.

On Saturday night, a 21-year-old woman was brought in the emergency for having breathlessness issues and was accompanied by 15 relatives. Due to no vacant incubator, she was put on an ambu bag for manual ventilation, which got the relatives angry. The relatives then assaulted the doctor who was on duty, causing deep bruises on his neck. No institutional FIR has been lodged in the case as of now.

“This has become a routine now where patients and relatives walk in and beat up a doctor. There is no way that a doctor can work in such  hostile environment. This is insensitive on the employer’s side to not even lodge an institutional FIR. If they do not file one by tomorrow 9 am, we will shut all the services at the hospital and go on strike,” said Dr Gursimar Singh, senior resident, DDU hospital.

Last week, three major hospitals of the Delhi government had gone on a strike after two resident doctors were beaten up by the relatives of a patient. During the strike, in a meeting held between the Principal Secretary of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare; Delhi Health Minister, Satyendra Jain and RDA members, the resident doctors had asked for increased security in every hospital and imposition of ‘One Patient, One Relative’ plan, under which only one attendant will be allowed with a patient.
