A day after a Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) volunteer was assaulted and paraded naked for raising her voice against the liquor mafia in outer Delhi's Narela, the Delhi Police on Friday arrested six women in connection with the case.

Lieutenant-Governor (L-G) Anil Baijal directed Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to ensure a speedy investigation into the case. Also, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal met the victim at the hospital and the L-G in the evening, besides summoning the Excise Commissioner.

The Delhi Police, meanwhile, have claimed that the woman was not paraded naked and that her clothes were torn while she was being beaten.

The volunteer had tipped off the DCW regarding the sale of illicit liquor in Narela by another woman, who along with other women, later assaulted the victim. None of the eye witnesses in the case interfered or tried to help the victim.

Special Commissioner of Police Dependra Pathak stated on Friday that on December 6, DCW chief Swati Maliwal, along with the volunteer, had gone to raid a premise where some containers of illicit liquor were found. A case was also registered in the matter.

"Later, on December 7, a group of local women beat up this volunteer. Certain aspects of the allegations were not correct but on the basis of the complaint by the victim, all six accused have been arrested," Pathak said.

Maliwal, who was present with the victim during the raid, tweeted: "For those who think that only one woman was paraded naked, they should know that the drug and liquor mafias operating in the national Capital have also exposed the police officers and the administration."

Talking about the Delhi Police's zero-tolerance policy towards illicit liquor, Pathak said: "The total number of cases registered against illicit liquor this year is 55, as compared to 42 in the previous year. The total number of related seizures was 1,218 as compared to 689 in the last year."
