Six years after the gruesome Nirbhaya rape incident shook entire nation, Delhi Commission for Women Chief, Swati Maliwal, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to implement strict laws for ensuring women safety and make women safety a priority.

Through her letter, she has attempted to draw the attention of Prime Minister of the 'gory incident that shook the conscience of the nation six years back', the brutal gang rape and murder of Nirbhaya.

"I want to remind you of the day that has let down humanity and this nation, which holds each girl as its daughter, your daughter. On this day 6 years ago an innocent woman was brutally raped and injured leading to her eventual death which shook the entire nation. The nation's 125 crore population named that woman -Nirbhaya," wrote Swati Maliwal, Chief, Delhi Commission for Women, to the Prime Minister.

"Today 6 years post the incident, I say this with pain in my heart, that the situation of women's safety in India is more or less the same. It is shameful that till today Nirbhaya has not received justice and thousands of lives like hers are awaiting justice while many more living the horrors of their life every day," she further wrote.

In her letter, Maliwal also raised questions on the slow or no action on the rising crime against women in the capital city.

She asked - why is it that the demand for expanding Delhi police force by 66,000 personnel has still not been approved? A country that talks of a Digital India have still not achieved a modern digitalized database for ensuring the safety of women? why is it that the issue of fast-track courts still remains unresolved? Why does not women safety laws include the formation of a committee that includes the home minister, LG, CM of Delhi, Police Commissioner and DCW chair in order to make the capital a rape-free, safe place for women to live in?

She appealed to the PM that women security is a burning issue for the nation and that he should be sensitive towards it.

A committee must be immediately formed comprising of the Chief Minister, High Court Chief Justice, Police Commissioner and Women Commission chairs in all states to implement the law for the death penalty to rapists.

This according to DCW Chief shall be a true tribute to Nirbhaya.
