Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal continued her hunger strike for the second consecutive day demanding death penalty for rapists of minor girls within six months and strict law on crime against women on Saturday. The commission head was joined by scores of women from Delhi and other parts of the country.

Maliwal had launched an indefinite hunger strike at Rajghat on Friday in the wake of rape cases of Unnao and Kathua. She had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday regarding the same issue. "I will not break my anshan until Prime Minister doesn't insure country for a better system for the safety of our daughters," she said.

Later on Friday evening, PM Modi had called the incidents as a "shame" for the country and asserted that the guilty would not be spared, and daughters will get justice.

In Kathua, an eight-year-old girl from the nomadic Bakerwal community had gone missing from near her house on January 10 and a week later, her body was found in the same area. In the Unnao case, a 17-year-old girl has alleged that she was raped by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar at his residence on June 4, 2017.

Meanwhile, gangrape survivor Nirbhaya's parents also reached the Rajghat to extend their support to Maliwal. "I feel very sad that while we have progressed a lot as a society but our daughters are still not safe today. I demand the rapists should be hanged. I am working with Swati ji for a long time and I support her Anshan and its all demands," said Nirbhaya's mother, Ásha Devi.

Earlier in March, the DCW had launched the 'Rape Roko' campaign after the brutal rape of an eight-month-old baby in January. Afterward, the Indian Medical Association and the district court bar associations also extended their support to the campaign.
